Slow Weekend in Mokhotlong

It was a pretty slow and peaceful weekend in Mokhotlong...yesterday it rained all day, and after getting caught in a torrential downpour we spent the rest of the day watching movies and trying to warm up! We have a really cool set up in the common rondavel with a projector and couches...it is like our own personal movie theater. (pics of the inside of the rondavel below) Previous volunteers and fellows have left lots of DVDs for us...I think they knew we would need them! There is no local weather channel here in Mokhotlong, but I am learning that the Bomay can tell the weather based on the clouds..if they hang laundry on the clothesline, you can count on at least a few hours of sunshine.
This morning, the Bomay hung laundry outside, and indeed we had a beautiful sunny day! We went on a hike up the hill behind TTL and it a great view of Mokhotlong. Tiana and I needed lots of breaks... We still get really winded walking around here, I think I'm still adjusting to the altitude! From the mountain we saw some sort of event going on on one of the fields in town. We walked over and found it was some sort of political rally, and decided not to stay since we couldn't understand the things they were chanting. Things seemed pretty calm, but we figured better safe than sorry!
I got brave enough to finally attempt baking in our tiny kitchen this morning. I was really hoping to make a carrot cake but we can't get cream cheese, so I made carrot muffins. Not nearly as good as mom's carrot cake, but still a success. (I'm not usually one to take pictures of the food I make, but I am particularly proud of these, so I've included a picture.) I am starting to miss the good from home already and am already thinking about my first meal when I get back!
Tonight we made a campfire and one of the night guards brought us peaches and maize from his garden. We roasted them over the fire and they were delicious! Roasted maize tastes like a combination of corn on the cob and popcorn. Mmm.
That's really all I have to report for now, it's been a slow few days. Im enjoying the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere here!
